Meta xDesign
Internal communication design

Concept

xDesign is the team in charge of building the tools that Facebookers use on a daily basis. It is part of DevInfra, a larger org of 2,800 people. I was the only communication designer, and I worked closely with directors, managers, product designers, and researchers to create a variety of visual communication pieces.

Tasks

  • Develop the branding, theme, and deck template for the DevInfra 2021 All Hands

  • Revitalize the org chart for enhanced clarity in order to increase efficiency within the team

  • Redesign xDesign's wiki for better information flow and create a new visual identity

  • Juggle a variety of concurrent projects with input from multiple stakeholders

Purpose

This role needed a visual designer to develop graphics used to streamline workflow processes, improve team performance and efficiency, introduce new project initiatives, and overall improve the visual communications within the org. Please note that because this was internal work, any confidential content is blurred out.

PROJECT ONE
DevInfra All Hands

DevInfra's 2021 All Hands was a high-visibility event within a group of 2,800+ people. It featured a number of presenters speaking alongside slides in a pre-recorded video format. I collaborated with a team of engineering directors, technical program managers, software engineers, and an in-house video production team to hone the 2021 presentation theme, speaker and topic selection, etc. I was in charge of creating the overall visual design style and translating it into a comprehensive deck template for the speakers to utilize, as well as create graphics leading up to the live event.

PROJECT TWO
Org Chart

One of the initiatives of the operations team was to revamp the outdated org chart so it could be utilized in new employee onboarding and shared more readily within the organization. The purpose behind this was to increase efficiency by providing clarity into the rather convoluted organizational structure, easily identify whom to contact within each team, and what specific tools each team member is working on. The previous chart was circular and not easily scalable, and small font sizes at differing angles made it hard to navigate and read.

Revamped Org Chart

My re-designed version was created with scalability and clarity in mind while allowing for much more information and detail to be included within the chart. The chart needed to be updated to reflect new pillars, team members, and tools. I collaborated with top-level managers to gather updated information to include in this new, expanded version. This static format was intended to be version 1.0 - primarily to flush out the new information design, update the data, and share it with the org for feedback. A future 2.0 version was planned to be interactive, potentially built in Figma.

PROJECT THREE
Wiki Design

Wikis serve as a portal of information for each team at Facebook, and usually consist of the main page and many sub-pages. The old wiki needed to be redesigned for better information flow and clarity with viewer usability and navigation in mind. It also needed to reflect a branding revamp, and I was in charge of creating a new visual identity for the team.

New Designs

I created two design style choices, shown here as full mockups of the wiki home page. The final mockup is then handed to the documentation engineer to build out.

PROJECT FOUR
Additional Projects

As the only visual communication designer, I was involved in a variety of other projects with the org such as presentation templates, graphics for workplace groups, upcoming events, swag, and more. A few examples are pictured here.

Final thoughts

It was a fun and challenging experience to manage a wide variety of high-visibility communication design projects that impacted and drove change within the org. I received positive comments from the directors, managers, product designers, engineers, and researchers I had the pleasure of working with.
